Time and time again I found myself questioning; that
graduates from any respectable engineering discipline are huge in number but
insignificant in professionalism and devotion. They all have the same
qualification but how do they distinguish themselves from others over the
course of professional career.
I have spent a few days working with engineers of urban and
civil disciplines and this makes me identify some unique qualities that stand
out in you as a successful engineer. These are:
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Ab innovative thought is common but without delivering it
effectively it does not remain to be an innovation. Strong communication
doesn't mean that they know each and every thing but they do know how to be
clear about the outcomes. Such people are good in report writing.
GOOD LISTENER
Everyone wants to be a good speaker but no-one realizes the
fact that good listeners succeed in life as they listen to other's problems and
come up with an appropriate solution in the welfare of mankind.
ACTION ORIENTED
People who talk about big deals never accomplish as they
believe in multitasking and an engineer is always focused on the activities
that give them the higher return. They never wait for the right time, they just
do it and then modify their next step accordingly.
TEAMWORK
Most of us want to work alone but the engineering world
demands 'teamwork' so as to listen to everyone, appreciate their ideas, work,
ask questions and then master the task.
These are some of the qualities which engineers built in
themselves to elaborate their skills and be the finest amongst the fittest.
"Thoughts lead on to purposes, purposes go forth in
action, actions form habits, habits decide character and character fixes our
destiny."
